Able Body, Stable Mind, Noble Soul

The first few pounds are the easiest to lose. Any one who has tried it will vouch for it. But unfortunately, for many they don’t remain ‘lost’. Adhering to a fitness regime for a few months can help you lose the next bunch of pounds. But again, it is the long term that we are looking at. Any body who has been striving to lose those extra pounds for even a few weeks know the dos and don’ts of eating and exercising. How about another approach…

Be Consistent…

You cannot hoard fitness! There is no question of not sleeping or not eating hereafter. Similarly there can never be full stop to exercising and taking the initiative to be healthy. Exercise has to be done everyday – like brushing your teeth, having a bath, eating your meals, excreting, sleeping… Never negotiate with yourself as if there was an option – there isn’t. To be healthy has to be a constant thought, ever present in every waking moment ensuring you never do something that will threaten that delicate balance between health and ‘dis-ease’. Gift yourself the fruits of consistency by never negotiating on the need to be aware of your health in everything you do. Begin today; do it everyday!

Eat right…

Imagine you are stranded with just a few hundred rupees in a strange land with an option to return home only after a few days. Will you be liberal in spending your money, or would every rupee count? Everyone understands that at times of recession, cash in hand is better than any asset on paper. Our body isn’t any different. If you threaten its survival by going on a starvation or restricted calorie diet, contrary to popular opinion that it will help you lose weight, your body will begin to burn healthy tissue and ‘store’ fat for future use as it perceives the lack of food as a threat for its very survival. That is why very often, people who lose weight dramatically in a short span of time, regain it all back and more within a few months. Your body is not a profit and loss account of income versus expenditure – calorie intake versus calories burnt. It is more like a balance sheet of genetic assets versus liabilities. It is not about calories and restriction diets; it is about nutrition. You are ultimately what you eat. So ensure you are giving your body the right nutrition to keep your body healthy.

Move your body…

Nothing in this universe is static. Thanks to Isaac Newton and Albert Einstein we know that neither time nor space is constant. According to the Theory of Everything, everything in this universe is vibrating strings. The very word ‘vibrating’ implies movement. How then about the human body? Life is movement. Your body was designed to be mobile – not remain stationery for 12 hours on a chair!  If you don’t use it you will lose it. Every part of your body needs to be moved periodically to ensure it is kept active. Never go for too long without some kind of a body movement. When I say movement I include all activities like walking, climbing stairs, sitting on the floor, carrying something heavy, pulling and pushing objects around, bending to pick up something, twisting around to reach for that file, reaching high up to remove that can… just move…

Be strong…

Your muscles are your most active metabolic tissue in your body. Your muscles not only give your body shape they act as biological pumps. When you move, your muscles contract forcing water, blood and oxygen through the body, much like pushing on a pump handle that forces water out of the ground. If we don’t pump our bodies with adequate movement, we don’t move these important fluids and we don’t remove waste efficiently from the body. Your muscles need to learn to bear weight – your body weight ! Your knee probably hurts because it cannot carry your full body weight as you walk and sit. Strength training is nothing but using smaller weights initially (starting from as low as 2.5 pounds) to teach muscles to start bearing the weight. It takes enormous efforts to build the kind of muscles body builders have. So don’t worry that you will bulk up like that! Especially women – it is equally your birthright to have healthy muscles. So start lifting those weights today. Whatever you current age it is never too late to begin exercising.

Make it a lifetime commitment…

Everybody understands the importance of Cardiovascular exercises. With the rising number of people succumbing to cardiac problems, a never before awareness has come to ensure people walk everyday to keep their heart healthy. What about those who live long but remain immobile thanks to aching knees and joint pains? When carrying a bag of groceries or climbing stairs, sitting in a low chair or even climbing into a car becomes a herculean task? Ever wondered why even if your heart is healthy you still end up with these life ruining conditions? People have been mislead to believe that keeping your heart happy is enough; that lifting weights is only for body-builders; that gym exercises is only for peek performers and cine stars. It is time to break that myth. Make a promise to yourself today!

To be healthy is a lifetime commitment you make to yourself – a promise to take care of this precious existence that can be experienced only through the health of your body. Exercise everyday – you cannot afford not to!
